Japanese country singer yodels his way into San Franciscan hearts

Toshio Hirano first traveled from Tokyo, Japan to Atlanta, Georgia in 1974 to marvel at the homeland of his favorite old-time country singers. After traveling throughout the southern states, he finally settled in the Mission district of San Francisco.

Toshio plays a distinct set of early country songs, most of which were first recorded by “father of country music” Jimmie Rodgers in the early 1930s. For the past few years Toshio has been perfecting his craft in local bars and cafés, striving to create an authentic sound and always connecting with his audience, however small.
