As students settle into their new schedules, some may forget to familiarize themselves with the myriad of hot spots on campus offering anywhere from a cup of coffee to live music.
“I think students should get to know all of the services on campus that are paid for via your student fees. There is so much offered on this campus,” said Alison Victor, a student working towards her Masters in Radio and Television, and the Entertainment Manager of the Depot.
The Cesar Chavez Student Center is the epicenter for most of the student activities. Home to most of the hot spots on campus, it is also the location of the campus bookstore, various student organizations, and a diverse number of eateries, including the Gold Coast Grill, Italian Creations and Asia Express. In addition, there is also a small food mart, information on transportation, and ATMs.
The Rack ‘N’ Cue is located on the Recreation and Dining Level of the Cesar Chavez Center. It has pool tables, air hockey and numerous video games. As a result, the area can become crowded very quickly, according to Aida Cheong, 21, a Rack ‘N’ Cue employee.
“The busiest time of day is from about 10 to 2 or when people have a break in between their classes,” said Quetzel Cortes, 26, the Rack ‘N’ Cue manager. According to Cortes, the Rack ‘N’ Cue center is also starting a new pool league this year.
He said they have teamed up with the American Pool Players Association to create an in-house pool league, which will begin sometime during the fall semester. This will give students the opportunity to create their own teams and compete against each other on Tuesday evenings.
“The nice thing about it is that it is a pretty level playing field,” Cortez said. “Whether you are bad or good, it usually evens out.”
Also returning this year from the spring semester are the Video Game tournaments organized by students who are video game enthusiasts. The tournaments are usually on Fridays at 3 p.m, and cost about $1 to participate.
The Depot, located on the lower conference level of Cesar Chavez, is a fun place to see live entertainment. Hosting live bands and free movies, it offers students entertainment when the school day has come to an end.
Alison Victor said the Depot can become jam packed when live bands are playing or when there is a DJ battle.
The Depot also broadcasts Monday Night Football during football season. “We plug the television into the big screen and the house sound system. You can’t beat it!” Victor said. The Depot is located right next to The Pub, where people can buy drinks and enjoy the live entertainment.
Café 101 and Natural Sensations are two of the popular eateries that sit on the plaza level of Cesar Chavez. The eatery offers many different types of coffee as well as a variety of pastries, ice cream, sundaes and milkshakes. For a more nutritious offering, Natural Sensations offers a healthier variety of foods including wraps, salads, smoothies, and fresh squeezed juices.
According to Victor, an SFSU student she once knew did not discover places on campus like the Depot, until it was time to graduate.
“They missed out on all the live music, gaming and fun there,” Victor said. “That’s a shame, it’s all here for you if you just look around.”
