Talking 'Woodcock'

Funnymen, Billy Bob Thornton and Seann William Scott, spend a morning to talk about old high school coaches, erections, and their roles as the stars of the new comedy film Mr. Woodcock, coming to theaters this Friday.

Q: What drew you to the role?

Thornton: "They gave me $50.7 million dollars. No, actually, it’s unusual, I mean, if I read a script that makes me laugh or cry or throw up or whatever, that’s it. The guys have written a really funny script. And then when Seann came on board and Susan Sarandon, it all made sense to me. I have Woodcock and 'School for Scoundrels' and 'Bad News Bears' and 'Bad Santa' kind of in a row. I guess when they need a funny prick, they call me."

Scott: "Or they call me."

Q: So, Seann can you tell us what drew you to the role?

Scott: "It was the opportunity to work with Billy, and the script is really funny."

Q: Did you ever have a horrible teacher like your character Mr. Woodcock?

Thornton: "Yeah, I had several. I had a few coaches that were Woodcock-like. I grew up as an athlete, so I had to run into a few of those. But I also had an algebra teacher who hated me more than anybody on the face of the planet. We called her “old red and gray” because she wore red and gray all the time.

And I had a problem with an erection once in her class, which she didn’t like at all.”

Scott:"I had some strange coaches like Mr. Woodcock, but they never ended up bangin’ my mom, that’s for sure."

Q:What is the most embarrassing memory from your school days?

Scott: “It always seems that you’d start to get a boner right when a teacher would call on you. I had to push that shit down and try figure out how to go up and point out where Atlanta, Georgia was on the map, so I guess it was geography class. I guess there’s that one. There’s another time where…ahh I can’t even tell you. We’ll just stick with the erection story."

Q: Bad Santa was known for being a really, really dark comedy, not just a dark comedy in name. Does this film has a similar tone?

Thornton: "Mr. Woodcock is a little more disciplined than the character in Bad Santa, but the humor is similar. We didn’t hold back a whole lot. And, in order to do that, you just have to go for it. You can’t like halfway of do those kind of things. That’s mainly it. You just have to go out there, and if the scene says screw a duck, you gotta screw a duck."

Q: What’s it like working with Billy Bob?

Scott: “I was really intimidated. I was really nervous, especially because I was a little bit out of my element with the role I was asked to play. One the first things that we did after meeting was actually we rehearsed this wrestling scene in the film.

So it was like, 'Hi, how ya doing?' and all of a sudden we go to a little gym area and the stunt coordinator is like showing us wrestling moves like 'Hey Billy, you get down on all fours and Seann you get behind him. You get up close and put your arm up over here and your leg right here.' And it was like 'Hey! Nice to meet ya!'

So it forced to become real close real fast, let’s put it that way. In a real sexual way.”

Q: How do you handle a hard-ass gym coach?

Thornton: "Well, you avoid them as much as possible. I think that’d be the first thing. You gotta strike a balance between listening to them and not pissing them off and also standing up for yourself, because they don’t really respond to weakness very well.

Q: Any adlibbing?

Scott: “[Thorton] would always adlib like almost every line.”

Thornton: "Well, I’ve kinda got ADD, so it’s hard to keep me from adlibbing, but the script is really good so we didn’t have to go off of it too much. But every now and then you gotta throw ‘em one."

Q: Billy, you broke your foot on set during the wrestling scene with Seann?

Thornton: “I didn't break my foot, Seann broke it."

Scott: "Yeah, that’s a pain I’m going to have to live with now. I broke one of my favorite actor’s feet."

Q: what is your favorite line from the movie?

Scott: “I like when [Thorton] says 'I’m known for my meat.' That’s so messed up.'"

Q: Any Future work?

Thornton: "I’ve got a couple things I wanna direct I just have to sort the time out."

Scott: “Porn. I've got some porn coming up."
