Students were given an unexpected performance out at the Quad when the Teokali group performed for SF State students to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.
The group wore blue and red skirts and penacho hats made of feathers as they danced to music to tell the story of Mestizo culture. The skirts and colorful tops were made of leather and their feet made noise with chayatoes, round beads with seeds in them.
“The performance was hella sick. It showed their culture as well as other cultures through dance and everyone got a chance to see it,” said Mario Huerta, 18, an international business major.
The event was originally for students in the Raza studies critical thinking class but the classroom was not big enough for the performers so the students decided to move the performance outside.
Before performing at SF State, the group was at Alcatraz for another performance celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day.
Some of the performers are from the Bay Area and Mexico City. “We just want people to understand or culture through dance and just talk to the people as well,” said Irma Tellez, 19. Tellez attends City College of San Francisco and plans to transfer to SF State.
The next Teokali performance will be on Thanksgiving at Alcatraz.
