Host Aldrich Sabac stepped up to the microphone at the beginning of the fourth annual variety and talent show presented by SF State's Pilipino American Collegiate Endeavor, PACE, and announced the show's opening to an audience of about 125 people "There will be all types of talentado going on tonight," he said to the crowd gathered in Jack Adams Hall on March 15. "Talentado" got its name from combining the word talent with the Tagalog word tarantado, which means goofy, stupid or comical. The humor filled event hosted an assortment of acts, from singing and dancing to comical skits and jokes, some of which were told by hosts Sabac and Derek Fernandez. "We had an idea of what we wanted to say and sort of had an outline of the jokes we wanted to tell, but mostly everything was off the top of our heads," said Fernandez, an SF State student . The show opened with a performance by April also known as Miss CarolineXOXO, who sang to the acoustics of two fellow guitarists. Jon Clapp, a SF State alumnus, followed Miss CarolineXOXO's performance and hit the stage with what he said was an unintentional message that was on his mind. Before performing his second song, Clapp, who earned his degree in speech communications, mentioned the upcoming budget cuts to the California education system and stressed the significance of its affects. "Around 1,600 teachers in the Bay Area are going to lose their jobs and when budget cuts are made, arts and theater are usually the first to go," Clapp said. Clapp said he doesn't mean to come across as a political person, and that life experiences inspire the majority of his music, Stevie Nader, a Sacramento State University student, also performed a compilation of songs from his demo CD, which contains six soulful R&B tracks. "Personally music has touched me," Nader said. "A lot of good comes from good experiences then again a lot of good comes from bad experiences too so it's a combination of things." Audience member and SF State student Carina Pineda said the show was something fun to attend. "It's enjoyable watching Filipino American artists doing what they love to do," said the 19-year-old freshman nursing major. Some viewers enjoyed other performances more than others. Lim and colleague Macrina Garcia, a reshman majoring is graphic design, especially enjoyed Group Therapy and FJD-Fierce Jenga Devices, a SF State dance group formed in February 2008. More acts took the stage through the night. Tracy Cruz closed out the show with three songs, two of which are on her new album, "Feelosophy." "It's events like these that are the most supportive," Cruz said. "Everyone is so welcoming and it just feels really good to be a part of it all." Cruz said she has been trying to perform at "Talentado" for the last two and a half years and finally got the chance this year after speaking with PACE activity coordinator Eric Andres. "It took a lot of hard work, but this is what I enjoy doing. I love organizing events and I hope to pursue a career in this field," Andres said. As this PACE event came to a close, people sang and danced as they exited Jack Adam Hall. "All I have to say is that was one hell of a good show," said Patrick Lim , a SF State sophomore computer science major. "Talentado" is the second fundraiser designed to raise money for PACE's largest production, PCN, Pilipino Cultural Night. The previous production was a fashion show held in February. "The majority of the funds that we raise go to producing the show (PCN)," Andres said. "It is our biggest production of the year. PACE was the first Pilipino-American student organization to have a PCN and has had the longest running PCN. This will be its 36th year." The event is a historical event on campus and many different schools model their show after PACE's, according to PACE coordinators. PCN is scheduled for May 3.
