The arts of women

Art, in all of its various and often womanly forms, was the subject of the Women Center’s second annual “Women in the Arts” show on April 7.

The event, held in the student center’s Jack Adam’s Hall, did not draw a huge crowd but the artists and audience members demonstrated passion for their crafts.

“I just feel that art is very important,” said Paty Castaneda, assistant director of the Women’s Center and a lead organizer of the event.

“It’s important for us, as women, to come out artistically and be able to show our artwork, because a lot of times--as women-- we don’t feel like we have the strength…we hold back a lot.”

Cecilia McLaren, a staff member at the Women’s Center who, along with Castaneda, recited a poem at the event, said women are still often silenced in the male dominated society.

“[This is] the chance for women to actually be heard and have their space where they can not only show their artwork, but they can actually speak out about anything they want to speak out about,” she said.
