BSU hip-hop event showcases campus talent

Hip-hop. How can one define it? Whether it is characterized by rap music, graffiti art, or break dancing, it’s up to the individual or group to decide what hip-hop means to them.

“Hip-hop has a culture, whether it’s dancing, singing, rapping or the attire you’re wearing, it still has a theme, an African theme in addition to an indigenous theme,” said Coby Obiesie, a Black Student Union coordinator at SF State.

The Black Student Union held its sixth annual Hip Hop Unity Jam on March 8, 2008 in Jack Adams Hall.
The event featured Bay Area underground rap and reggae artists and poets, many of them SF State students.

With the help of Obiesie, the event was a place for artists to showcase their talent and it helped to promote hip-hop music and underground artists.
