A colorful display of student art is hanging in Golden Gate Park. The de Young Museum hosted its 10th "College Night," titled "Art for All," on Friday, March 21, 2008. A new exhibit pulled in college students to participate in creating new works of art that are inspired by edgy European pop artists, Gilbert and George. Click the link on the right to view multimedia... Gilbert and George have worked almost exclusively as a pair since their college years at the St. Martin's School of Art in 1960s London. "After I saw [Gilbert and George] in this video called 'Bend It' I became an instant fan," said Lily Dang, a student at SF State. "They really have no inhibitions and they make you see all things as art, even [human feces]." A growing number of museums around the Bay Area, including the de Young and Oakland Museum of California, are beginning to tap into the artistic base that colleges have. "We are trying to build stronger partnerships between museums and colleges," said Robert Melton, a graduate student in Museum Studies at SF State and event coordinator at the de Young. "We are trying to get college students more involved because they do not use the programs that the museum offers." The Gilbert and George exhibit can be seen at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park until Sunday, May 18, 2008.
