Surrounded by upbeat dance music, students enjoyed free food and wine at the Caesar Chavez Student Center Art Gallery on Nov. 14 as they observed the art installation by Carolina Convers enitled “Contained Reflections.”

Convers’ face lit up as individuals approached her with itching questions regarding the composition and technique behind her unique styling and artistic representation. She walked with them through the gallery, happily explaining the intent behind each piece.

“The art that has been installed in the gallery has been a six-month plan in the making,” said Daniela Paez, a student and gallery curator. “I sent her photographs of the gallery and she redesigned them with the pieces she wanted to place and where.”

Convers’ gallery layouts can also be seen in the gallery.

Convers’ technique includes “a lot of hard work,” she said. “After studying fine art in Columbia and receiving my B.F.A., I have been very lucky to be offered the exhibition opportunities I have.”

Her process for photographs include selecting random photographs that strike her interest, uploading them to a photo editing program where she makes changes and prints them out onto clear acetate, then uses paint to invert and modify the image.

“The artwork is very interactive and you can really immerse yourself,” Paez said. “It not only has that concept of new media but also of memory, so I am hoping that people feel identified.”

Convers makes a living out of her art, participating in fairs and auctions and exhibiting her work in many places such a Europe, Russia, Latin America and the United States.

“I stumbled upon this exhibit by chance,” said Filipe Rivera, a journalism major. “I like the overall theme of the work, the styling is uniform and works very well together.”

The exhibit features a number of photographs, also including a few pieces that students are welcome to examine and interact with.

“It’s amazing that the artist could create such beautiful, bold pieces through being shy. It’s really an interesting concept,” said Sabrina Habel, a recent graduate of SF State.

Convers currently has work in Oscar Romano’s gallery in Mexico and in Gary Nader’s gallery in Florida. She has received many honorable mentions and representations of her pieces across the world.

The gallery will be featuring “Contained Reflections” through Dec. 22 and is open for viewing from Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
