Friday April 3
Jeremy Jay, The Mantles at Cafe Du Nord, 9:30 p.m., $10, 21+ -- Jeremy Jay's hypnotic beats and melodic vocals will single-handedly leave you in a trance. Currently on a huge whirlwind tour, Jay's simple, lo-fi, electronic pop is simple and engaging. Local, lazy garage rockers The Mantles provide enthusiastically relaxed support. Professional wallflowers aplenty will be in attendance, if you're into that sort of thing.
Saturday April 4
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, De Young Museum, Museum of African Diaspora, All Day, Check museum Web site's for hours, FREE -- So you've been meaning to check out that bad-ass new Warhol exhibit at the De Young, but you're not down to shell out the $6? Here's the last time you can use your debit card without spending a dime. The Bank of America Museums on Us program provides free access to any of these great museums as long as you have a Bank of America credit or debit card. Go get some culture while the banks are still paying for it -- they won't be able to afford it much longer.
Sunday April 5
"Made In U.S.A.", Castro Theatre, Various showings, $10 -- As always, the Castro Theatre has the US premiere of this fabulous film that will enchant and confuse. By the legendary Jean Luc Godard, "Made In U.S.A." features a pixie-ish and stylish Marianne Faithful at her most charming. The film that marked the end of his creativity inspired by his ex-wife, Anna Karina, the sheer style, complexity and head-scratching plot-lines are a treat. Remember: like many things shown at the Castro, this is not available on DVD, VHS or TV and is strictly only available on their 35 mm print.
Monday April 6
Krazy for Karaoke, The Knockout, 6 p.m.-9:30 p.m., Free, 21+ -- So lets say you have an obsession with singing Journey, but you're tired of the douchebags running your show at The Mint. (Lets face it: they do. And it ruins the show.) Head here to this loveable dive bar to belt out all your favorite Steve Perry songs, or bring tomatoes to throw at your friends. With Czechvar on tap for only $3, you're bound to get some liquid courage. A tip: try the adult root beer floats. You won't be sorry.
Tuesday April 7
Swing Goth, El Rio, 8 p.m.-Midnight, Free, 21+ -- The name may be misleading, but this is no dancing in the dark. Swing Goth was invented in the city to help make swing dancing fun and more modern. Lessons are from 8-9 and can be anything from punk to really horrible 80's songs. It's also margarita night, and for $3, you can definitely earn your dancing shoes. Do you see a trend here at all?
Wednesday April 8
Vetiver, Adam Stephens, Great American Music Hall, 9 p.m., $16 -- Known for their lazy and beautiful folk rock, Vetiver releases their new album, Tight Knit, this week and this is the party to be at. Though they're most known for the involvement of freak folk troubadour Devandra Banhart in their band, their newest record shows promise and beauty in the same strum. Support is provided by Richard Swift and Adam Stephens of Two Gallants fame.
