The de Young's bi-annual College Night is back, which means it's time to dress up and go drinking and dancing. Word on the street is there will be art, too.

The theme for this College Night is "Warhol: Now and Then: A Tribute to Andy Warhol". The special event coincides with the de Young's current showcase exhibit, "Warhol Live" which showcases the iconic artist's influence on music, movies and TV with 600 unique pieces.

College Night features dozens of pieces from artists all over the Bay Area, including SF State. The pieces on display pay tribute to or drew inspiration from Warhol's eclectic and productive career.

"Some students are taking a traditional approach, others are taking a more contemporary approach, you know, pushing the boundaries," said Robert Melton, the project coordinator for the event.

College Night will feature pieces by Melissa Love, David Silverman, Rachel Frankel and others. There will also be poetry readings, films and presentations, including a paper by SF State art history major Luis De la Torre.

"That's awesome that students will be able to have their work in the same space as Warhol's," said Ryan Nguyen, an SF State junior. Nguyen attended the main Warhol exhibit when it opened and said he'd likely return for the student's work.

Jenn Hernandez, one of the night's featured SF State artists, will be displaying her photography piece "Bathroom Super Star." Hernandez's piece captures the essence of a popular local band having a good time in a bar and is inspired by Warhol's muses, whom he nicknamed his "superstars."

"I wanted to explore the idea that Warhol had about the relationship of music and art," Hernandez said. "We hold rock stars both up on a pedestal and close to our heart."

The event is more than just a showcase of local student talent. While College Night also compliments the museums current special exhibit, this year's event calls for something a little extra.

"This crosses many generations, and we're expecting to draw a huge crowd. There are a lot of things happening that didn't happen in previous events," Melton said.

The museum stays open until 8:45 p.m. The café will remain open to serve a special dinner menu, and will even feature a cocktail bar.

After checking out the local talent, attendees can head over to Wilsey Court for a

Studio 54 inspired dance. DJ Felix and DJ Lamont will be at the event, and guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Studio 54 celebrity, or in 70s "Factory" attire. Those looking to draw some fashion inspiration for Warhol himself can participate in the Warhol look-a-like contest.

While the festivities will be fun and lively, the real stars of the night are the artists.

"It's really a cultural experience we try to give. Open their eyes to new artwork. I love working with emerging artists." Melton said.

"It's so exhilarating to be featured in the exibit," Hernandez said.

College Night is free to all university students with an ID and that includes access to the entire museum. For non-university guests, admission is $10.

Other schools represented in the College Night exhibit include City College of San Francisco, California College of the Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, Academy of Art University, Art Institute of California-San Francisco, Berkeley City College, U.C. Berkeley, Cal State East Bay, Foothill College, San Jose University, Stanford University, Ohlone College, Laney College, Hospitality House Community Arts, and Shih Yu-Lang Central YMCA.
