Comedy College: A cheap speakeasy with A+ laughs

College has never been as much fun as it is over at the San Francisco College of Comedy. Comedians know it's a riot and so does the audience. Even before the jokes ensued, the audience was laughing, talking and drinking.

"I've seen some pretty funny people here," said Jason Henry, a third-time attendee. "The line-up is different every time. It usually starts with the amateurs and then almost always the headliner is a professional."

Since 1999, the College of Comedy has offered students classes to better their comedic skills and honors its top two students by allowing them to perform as professionals in the college's shows.

Lasting a little over an hour and 30 minutes, the line-up featured a total of seven comedians, each with jokes uniquely their own.

In all, about 80 attendees came to watch the comedians do what they do best at the Clubhouse's weekly Friday night show at 9.

Located on the fifth floor of 414 Mason St. near Geary Street, the little laughter room is just a hop away from Union Square.

"It's a lot of fun," said Sarah Gilson, a second-time attendee. "The show is solid and it's BYOB."

Although the clubhouse has a BYOB policy, it welcomes all ages to watch its shows.

It recommends attendees to be at least 18 years of age, since most of the material is mature. Minors are required to have a parent or legal guardian with them in order to enter.

The Clubhouse sells its own concessions -- which can be purchased from the snack machine -- but allows members of the audience to bring their own food and drink.

Admission is only $5 on open mic nights, $15 for professional shows and is "by far the cheapest club," said Henry.

The Clubhouse provides live shows five days a week with Tuesdays through Thursdays as open-mic nights. Experienced professionals perform on Fridays and Saturdays.

Every night is sure to provide enough laughter to brighten any mood. With fun and hilarious jokes, students are offered an awesome change of pace to their usual night out.
Tickets can be purchased at the door, or online at www.sfcomedycollege.com.
