Fantasies come to life on Venus

A heavy metal version of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" blasts through the loudspeakers at the outdoor stage of Venus' Playground, as three young women strike seductive poses in front of a largely leather-clad audience. Their backsides are turned towards the Folsom Street Fairgoers, and their grungy fishnet stockings and skimpy T-shirts leave little to the imagination. "They're inappropriately sexy and salacious," announced Queen Cougar, who emceed the event, about the dancers of "Rubenesque Burlesque." "They're big girls in little clothing." While erotic dance moves and a daring striptease send the transfixed audience into a state of indulgence, it quickly becomes apparent that despite being overweight, these women exude confidence and are extremely in tune with their curvaceous bodies. Big and bodacious, Rubenesque Burlesque redefined conventional standards of beauty and sex appeal during their performance at the fair's Venus' Playground Sept. 27. Since it was first installed four years ago, the designated women's area of San Francisco's annual leather fair has given kink enthusiasts identifying as female "in the past, present and future" a platform to celebrate their sexuality. "It's a women's stronghold," said Marilyn Hollinger, the treasurer of Exile, a sponsor of Venus' Playground. "The Folsom Fair is targeted at men -- this is a place for kink-friendly women to share with each other." Although the idea of Venus' Playground is to stay as inclusive as possible when it comes to the definition of "woman," the fenced area included two large white tents that were strictly off-limits to the opposite sex. Known as "the dungeon," the first tent lent itself to demonstrations and informational workshops that included bondage, while the second tent was a space in which the women could safely put what they learned into practice -- with limitations, of course. "Venus' Playground was way beyond my expectations," said Glenda Rider, executive producer of the International Ms. Leather Weekend. "Some things, you can't do in a tent. But there are a lot of other things that work very well." "The idea was to have a separate area for women," said Madame Butterfly, chair of Venus' Playground and a Folsom Street Fair board member. "It's a place where women can go to share demonstrations and entertainment without having a million guys taking pictures of them." From stilettos to pasties, leather and latex, sensual spanking to whips and clothespins -- nearly all fetishes and fantasies were brought to life at the Playground. "It seems like men come first in so many respects," said Kitty Von Quimm, a dancer for Rubenesque Burlesque. "Women have to pave their way to everything. The women's space is a safe space where we can enjoy our sexuality and kinks together." Many visitors to Venus' Playground said they let go of their inhibitions and sexual stereotypes; others said they were inspired by the accepting and comforting environment. "Every woman is gorgeous," said Juicy D. Light, the artistic director and founder of Rubenesque Burlesque. "And you have to include yourself in your own definition of beauty."
