Referendum May Change Scope of Athletics

The Student Fee Advisory Committee met Tuesday, giving its final stamp of approval to the recent student athletics/intramurals fee referendum, which is expected to increase fees by $35 over the next six years.

Mike Simpson, athletic director for SF State said final approval of the fee increase will go a long way to help the department.

"We been providing services a a minimal operational level," he said. "This will allow us to maintain our current level for the first year and after that we hope to start expanding our programs."

Simpson explained that the department's scope would be more limited than in the past. "We want to develop better teams and have better interaction with the students on campus and will probably concentrate on 11 or 12 sports -- and do those well."

According to the results of the vote, 4,291 students were in favor of the fee increase and 933 were opposed.

A motion to certify the results of the vote as presented was made and the vote to approve was unanimous.

The next step in the process will be to obtain President Corrigan’s approval.

“A letter will be sent (to Corrigan) signed by me and the co-chair of the committee stating that the results have been approved and the ball is basically in his court,” said David Abella, outgoing president of Associated Students Inc., who along with Penny Saffold, vice president of student affairs/dean of students, co-chaired the committee.

Maria Brown, executive secretary to the vice president of student affairs said that she anticipates the letter certifying the results of the referendum will be delivered to Corrigan’s office by early next week.
