Grads Line Up for Their Caps and Gowns

Graduation is just around the corner and some seniors are waiting in lines that wrap around the corner in preparation for the official ceremony.

While the line for graduates getting their ceremony garb wrapped in front of the SFSU Bookstore lobby Wednesday morning, the workers stood waiting patiently in the afternoon with no one waiting in line.

Brian Zimmerman, associate general manager of the SFSU Bookstore said most students are able to get their commencement tickets and cap and gown with ease, however times for waiting in line do fluxtuate.

Graduating students are required to wait in a line where they confirm that their name is on the list of graduates, then they fill out a card with their name and student information. Next, they proceed to another line inside the bookstore to pay $42.95 for the rental of a bachelor's cap and gown rental, or $55.95 for a master’s degree cap and gown, which includes a ceremonial hood.

One more line awaits the graduates, where they stand to finally receive their cap and gown.

Some seniors are getting a bit of a shock when they get to the front of the line to get their order form for their cap and gown. Some expecting to be on the bookstore’s list of graduates are being told their name is not there.

“Some departments are reviewing the applications and those names don’t show up on that list,” said Emily Luu from the registrar’s office.

She said there may be other reasons why a student’s name may be left off the list.

“Students who missed the deadline for applying to graduate have been coming in a lot,” Luu said.

Zimmerman said while some students are finding out their name is not on the list, much of the process is still going smoothly.

“There are a few whose names are not on the list. Out of thousands of people, it occasionally happens,” Zimmerman said.

Students who are told their name is not on the list must go to the Student Services building and get a letter from the registrar, which will allow them to get their cap and gown.

The letter tells the bookstore the student’s name did not appear due to “university error,” which has since been corrected.

When graduating senior Susan Szewczyk got to the front of the line only to be told that her name was not on the list for graduation, she was worried.

“When I found out I wasn't on the list, I got very concerned," Szewczyk. "I thought at the 11th hour someone in the academic counseling center must have made a mistake and I didn't have enough credits to graduate."

After a conversation with the registrar, Szewczyk was reassured.

"As I walked to the One Stop Center, I realized that I had a department hold on my grad app and maybe that was the problem. As it turned out, that was exactly the problem,” Szewczyck said.

“(An assistant registrar) said that for the first time ever the departments had told the registrar to put a "D" next to the apps that had holds, and everyone was getting bounced,” she said.

Gene Ferguson in the registrar’s office said at first he thought that students whose departments were holding their application for final review were not on the graduation list that the bookstore has. However, it seems now that the bookstore has those names on a separate list. He said about 20 students were sent to the Student Services Center for the correction form early in the week.

“Year in and year out we find different wrinkles in the system,” Ferguson said. “That’s why we have the form.”

Edith Tirado, graduating senior, had no problem with the lines. She got in line at about 10 minutes before 2 p.m. and was finished quickly.

“It was pretty fast,” Tirado said. “It only took me about 15 minutes.”
