Goblins and fairies may not be the only ones cheering and clapping on Halloween.
A handful of SF State on-campus groups anticipate students gathering for a Halloween rally, concert and costume party on Monday, Oct. 31 from Noon to 2 p.m. in Malcolm X Plaza. The International Socialist Organization (ISO), Voices for Sexual Freedom (VOX) and the College Democrats are hoping to persuade voters against Proposition 73.
The proposition, dubbed the “teen abortion” proposition, is seeking to change California law, by requiring minors to notify their parent or guardian before having an abortion.
According to the summary prepared by Attorney General Bill Lockyer, Proposition 73 amends California Constitution and will prohibit abortion for minors until 48 hours after a physician notifies the minor’s parent/legal guardian. The only exception would be in a medical emergency or with parental waiver.
The Proposition defines abortion as causing the “death of the unborn child, a child conceived but not yet born.” It allows minors to obtain a court order waiving the notice based on clear, convincing evidence of minor’s maturity or best interests.
“We’re against Prop. 73,” said Sarah Levine, 23, history major and member of ISO. “I don’t want to prevent people from being so afraid of getting an abortion, they’ll induce it themselves with a coat hanger or falling down the stairs,” said Levine.
The College Democrats, ISO and VOX are all listed on the rally flyers posted around campus, with the words “Let’s Defeat Prop 73” scrawled across a mock Frankstein drawing, as event sponsors.
“We haven’t taken an official vote on the proposition. The general sentiment is people are against it,” said Kristen Anderson, 24, Classics major and Students Against War member, not affiliated with the rally.
The parental notice proposition has caused controversy amongst voters, with support for the proposition hard to find.
However, according to the Official Voter Information Guide, arguments in favor written by former California Supreme Court Justice William P. Clark, Mary L. Davenport, M.D., and organizing director of Parent’s Right to Know state without parent’s knowledge, parents are not prepared to help their young daughters with complications that may result from an abortion. This includes serious physical, emotional and psychological pain as well as further sexual exploitation such as incest or rape, which pregnancy serves as evidence for.
VOX wants to educate voters about what Proposition. 73 is and how it will affect California.
Nora Dye of Planned Parenthood and Leah Marchenko of NARAL are set to speak about the proposition.
