SF State student Ivan Zimmerman, 21, died Saturday night after allegedly falling from a stairwell in the Village at Centennial Square, Building A.
In a statement SF State Spokeswoman Ellen Griffin made to SF Gate, Griffin stated that Zimmerman was pronounced dead at San Francisco General Hospital at 11:22 p.m.
"He was observed to be drinking alcohol earlier in the evening,'' Griffin said in the statement. “SFSU residences have a ban on parties, but the school does not ban alcohol.”
SF State freshmen Sabrina Kesler and Adam Simonoff, both 18, were at the scene when the incident occurred.
“We were just hanging out, then we heard a loud sound,” said Kesler. “It sounded like either something really loud hitting the asphalt very hard or like something being cracked very hard. I can’t get over the sound that I heard.”
Simonoff was the first to approach Zimmerman, yelling at his friends to call 911.
“I went up to the body and there was a lot of blood,” said Simonoff. “There were cuts on his face with blood coming out of the back of his head.”
The University Police Department has not been available for direct comment, but officers posted fliers in search of witnesses of the incident.
The UPD is also investigating a disturbance that occurred in the general area around the same time Zimmerman was found, said Sgt. Wilson.
The UPD is requesting anybody with information about either incident contact Detective Troy Liddi at 415 338 3069.
