Watch out everyone, try not to piss anyone off too much, they just might pull an uzi out on your ass. Well, maybe not, but it’s more of a possibility as of Monday, Sept. 13th, which marked the expiration of a ten year assault weapons ban and giving the green light to sell 19 military like weapons, over the counter.
The bill, which was signed in 1994 by former President Bill Clinton, barred the sale of any guns with large capacity magazines or any military features such as a pistol grip. Clinton pushed the ban fiercely ten years ago in response to the killing of eight people in a San Francisco office on California Street. The gunman used two semiautomatic weapons, weapons that were banned until Monday.
Like everything else these days, the ban has become a hot topic in terms of the November elections. Even so, the candidates have slightly mentioned the expiring ban but basically gave it little attention.
Kerry made some comments about how Bush did not endorse the ban and did nothing to encourage Congress to even vote on whether the ban should expire or re-instated. Though criticizing Bush in regards to the ban, Kerry was seen campaigning in Kentucky holding a rifle. Great.
This country is ridiculous! Any country that will let me go out and buy an uzi is just not thinking straight. I don’t want to be able to buy a huge gun and I certainly do not want people around me, that may be a little bit crazier or off than I, buying a gun.
I don’t understand the people that are running our country and that let things like this happen. Most issues like this come down to money and politics and with that said it's no wonder the National Rifle Association has such a pull on the presidential candidates. The NRA has about three million members with a lot of influence in the U.S.
Great, an army of rifle toting conservatives with a lot of money, that’s exactly who we need influencing American politics. Neither Bush or Kerry want to say anything against this ban because they are afraid of losing votes. The NRA has already said they will endorse Bush AFTER the ban expires.
Many say the expiration of the ban will give terrorists easier access to automatic weapons. You would think with Bush leading the ‘war on terror,’ that he would deplore the expiration and demand a vote in Congress.
But then again, Bush poured two hundred billion dollars into Iraq and put nothing into the education system of his own country. Logic is not his friend.
