Fake News Tells the Truth
Comedy revitalizes the news but it might not be the answer

Stephen Colbert did what most liberals only dream of by mocking President Bush in his speech at the White House Correspondents Association’s annual dinner while conservatives cringed and had a general look of uneasiness.

Colbert, a descendent of “The Daily Show”, now hosts his own show on Comedy Central, “The Colbert Report.” Both shows criticize the current government for their actions, or lack thereof, and poke fun of the conservative side.

The president has done a lot of things and made several misjudgments that liberals don’t agree with and many of us turn to fake news programs to get a sense of relief from the FOX News side. However, we’re not turning to CNN or any other news program. We’re turning to “The Daily Show” which prides itself on being fake news.

Colbert and even Jon Stewart, host of “The Daily Show” are a few public figures that have stepped forward to openly state that the president isn’t capable of acting out his job. Colbert took the opportunity on May 1 to take on a lot of issues that most journalists would never bring up in front of the president. We’re talking plummeting poll numbers, the Dick Cheney shooting incident, and generally ignoring facts and listening to a gut instinct. It was a brilliant performance of wit and sarcasm that left some of us beaming because someone finally could be honest about their opinions of the president.

The problem is that regular journalists would rather throw in the towel then gather the nerve to criticize the Bush administration and ask tough questions. If you’re a fake journalist then your sense of fear is replaced by courage simply because you can get away with it without the consequences that a real journalist would face.

It’s because they’re comedians at heart disguised as journalists with better looking suits. They’re good at what they do and they make the news easier to digest but people should realize that their shows are not the only source.

Fake news journalists shouldn’t be the only ones with a voice, journalists have the ability to take on the president and criticize his faulty moves. We can laugh at Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart and appreciate their points but deep down its real journalists who should be taking charge. Besides, with the new all time low approval rating, now is the time to take a cheap shot.
