Editor,

Kendra Hartmann’s unreasoned opinion column attacked SF State’s staff. Ten years ago we had twice the number of custodians (120) compared to now (60) with one million additional square feet online. President Corrigan recently apologized for the low staffing at SF State at a meeting of the Board of Trustees in Long Beach.

When the recycling program started by students showed a profit, SF State removed the program and reassigned the recycling duties to laborers and custodians without additional compensation. The majority of these employees are non-Caucasian, non-native speakers and are the lowest paid on campus.

When my colleagues and I are through supporting 300 students, 500 applicants, 40 faculty and a department chair, while managing the budget, curriculum, student problems, meeting deadlines, and answering daily questions by phone and in person, we will be happy to chat it up with the students.

Hartmann's remarks are naive, discriminatory, inflammatory, and unfair.
