The war between Mayor Gavin Newsom and Board of Supervisor President Aaron Peskin started when Peskin ripped into Newsom’s use of funds from city agencies, like MUNI, to pay some employees’ salaries.
Shortly after, documents were released revealing that Peskin had made harassing phone calls to city employees. Peskin immediately accused Newsom of releasing the documents. Now it seems that city politics seems to be all about mud slinging.
In what may be a historical presidential election, it’s refreshing to remember that this year is an election year for the Board of Supervisors, too.
San Francisco severely needs a change in their legislative leadership. While both Peskin and Newsom are in the wrong, Peskin has made it his mission to scrutinize and oppose Newsom’s every move.
Political differences aside, the local bureaucracy have not demonstrated the ability to reach out and compromise. These children masquerade as adults and disrupt city business when they constantly attack one another.
But it’s not only Peskin that will be forced to leave his seat. Supervisors Jake McGoldrick (District 1), Tom Ammiano (District 9) and Gerardo Sandoval (District 11) are all termed out.
The November election has never been more necessary. Whoever holds the board presidency has the chance to restore dignity to the board or keep up the mud-slinging.
