Letter to the Editor: Illuminating Compost

Re: City compost fines: A trashy proposal (10/8/09)
To the Editor,
As a former editor at my college paper, I was saddened to read the [X]press' pundit-like language in its editorial regarding San Francisco's move to require its residents, myself included, to have separate bins for landfill waste, recycling waste and compost waste. The City is in fact "Getting Real," to paraphrase the article, by playing catch-up to cities across the United States which recognize that about half of our household waste heading to landfills is organic food matter, much of which can be composted. Consider where the "400 tons of compost...from of [sic] San Francisco daily" would go otherwise.
If the [X]press bothered to gather data from sources other than a few Web sites, including often quoted and anonymous SFGate online commentators, then they might have been able to illuminate the conversation, rather than join the plethora of cable news networks and flailing papers which spout rhetoric without considering its context.
