Re: Mystery, History & Cocktails (11/12/09)
I am confused about the choice to have "Mystery, History & Cocktails" be the cover story in the Nov. 12 paper. While it may be interesting to cover a "local find," I can't see why a full page of pictures and details promoting a San Francisco bar is considered that newsworthy. Meanwhile, inside the paper, there are a number of interesting articles covering the Palestinian and Native American Mural Celebrations and veterans, to name a few.
As a counselor addressing substance abuse-related problems on campus, an article that is written more like an advertisement for a bar communicates a message glorifying alcohol consumption. Paid advertisements do enough to promote overdrinking and target college students to boost their profit margins. I was hoping for a different message from our campus paper.
