Political Comedian Durst Thrills SF

Political comedian Will Durst performed Friday, April 9 2004, at Cobb's Comedy Club in San Francisco. At a time when many people are protesting the war in Iraq, anxious about the threat of terrorism and organizing against the decisions of leaders at state and national levels, Durst contends to stand up and make people laugh. Durst remembers in the days that followed 9/11. "We all shared the same 48 hours," he said. "It was like cathartic--people needed to laugh. It made it more real if you could laugh at it. Less unreal if you could laugh at it. Less of a tragedy (though it is still a tradgedy.) I think comedy is really important. Laughter allows hope back in on the exhale, trying to get poetic," he continued. A Milwaukee native, Durst is considered America's number one political comedian who has received rave reviews from the L.A. Times, the SF Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune and the Washington Post. Durst remembers growing up, "At my inner table, you got points if you made everyone else laugh. I was always the new kid in school. My parents moved around a lot. I went to 14 different schools before I graduated from high school." Currently, Durst boasts of five Emmy nominations, is the host/co-producer of the PBS series "Livelyhood" and is a regular commentator on NPR and CNN. In addition, Durst has received seven nominations for the American Comedy Awards Stand Up of the Year award.
