There is a new place for women to go on campus—Lambda Chi Mu.

Lambda Chi Mu is a Jewish sorority founded at SF State earlier this year. It was the culmination of the efforts of Gabrielle Yedid and Dona Standel. The girls wanted to start a sorority for Jewish women, which they thought San Francisco State lacked.

This year, the sorority has participated in different charity events, including the Light the Night Leukemia Walk that took place Oct. 2 and the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Oct. 19.

Along with philanthropic events, the sorority is involved in community outreach. Lambda Chi Mu has read to children at Beth Israel-Judea, a Jewish temple at 265 Brotherhood Way. Tamar Stein, philanthropy chair for Lambda Chi Mu, has plans for the sisters.

“We are going to help clean up the beach with an organization in Golden Gate Park on the 19th of November,” Stein said. “One of the main values that we push is philanthropy.”

Lambda Chi Mu began as a campus organization. Dona Standel said that they had to start in this way in order to be recognized as a campus entity. “First, we had to register with the Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development (OSPLD).”

“We were originally going to start it as Alpha Epsilon Pi, the Jewish national sorority,” Yedid said.

According to its Web site, the OPSLD requires all new greek organizations to attend various workshops and complete specific trainings. It also requires each organization to draw up a constitution and bylaws.

Once this has been done, organizations must hold three events per semester. There has to be one educational, one social and one pertaining to development. Then the matter goes to a vote.

“When we had the constitution and some officers, we did all kinds of philanthropy events,” Standel said.

Currently, the sorority has 12 members, not including pledges. Twenty-seven students rushed at the beginning of the fall semester.

Yedid said that women do not have to be Jewish to enter the sorority. All women on campus are welcome to apply for membership during the bi-annual rush week, which is held at the beginning of the spring and fall semesters.

“I’ve had young girls come up to me and thank me for starting what we did,” Standel said. “There was this one girl who told me people were talking behind her back about her religion and she felt comfortable telling us about it. That makes me proud of what we’ve accomplished.”
