A small audience gathered in Knuth Hall on Thursday night to enjoy a show entitled "Poetry as Music: An Evening of Art Song." The show, which consisted of German ballads, was put together by SF State lecturer, Corey Head.
Head invited colleagues from previous shows he has done in the Bay Area to sing with him and wanted to give his students and everyone else a chance to see how local professionals perform.
"There will be four of us singing tonight and we will all be singing operatic pieces," Head explained. "The singers that I have chosen were all based on their voices and how we sounded and we will be finishing with a quartet, which will show the different ranges."
Each singer sang three to four songs and they ended with a quartet as a finale.
Head instructs the one on one voice lessons at SF State and works with students on pronouncing German lyrics.
"A lot of my students will be watching me tonight to make sure I'll be pronouncing my music right," Head said.
Head, pianist Steven Bailey and three singers, Virginia Pluth, Heidi Waterman and Joshua Henderson began working on this show in June of last year. Head said he would love to make this concert an annual event if there is a good turn out and people request them back for another show.
The crowd consisted of students, family and people looking to enjoy a night of music.
"I think that it is so great to have such operatic shows right here on campus," Tatiana Rosales, 19 said. "I am an undeclared major thinking about claiming music as my major and watching beautiful music like this encourages me to go for it."
Tickets were $10 for the general audience and $5 for students and seniors. All the money is going to the school of music art and dance at SF State.
"San Francisco State has a great music program, which is why my wife and I make it to these types of shows every once in a while," Frank Goldsman said. "The show was peaceful and classic they did an excellent job.
