Men share their stories in Cock Tales

SF State's Studio Theater was bustling with people to see the first ever Cock Tales- a night of storytelling put on by Students For A SAFE Campus.

The sold out night opened its doors promptly at 6:30 pm, while a crowd of people anxiously waited to see if any seats would open up. Luckily, they were able to stand at the back and view the show, as no one was turned away. The packed theater was the perfect environment for a night of men sharing their stories.

Cock Tales is an open forum reminiscent of the wildly popular Vagina Monologues, where 15 men of different ages and races gathered to tell their story of masculinity, identity, sexuality, violence, rape and love.

"Cock Tales is a storytelling project where a bunch of guys can express their experiences of masculinity because we think that the reason why violence happens- especially against men and women- is because of gender socialization," said Vincent Lam, 21, President of Students for a SAFE Campus.

"This is a forum for folks to be able to break those barrier lines and think out of the box and be able to express themselves openly as who they are," he continued.

And that is what the 15 different performers did. Through music, spoken word, sharing and poetry, the audience welcomed everything from the jokes to the heart-warming poetry.

When asked what Lam thought of the overwhelming response of the crowd, he said, "Being able to see this packed house where people are just standing up and still staying here to watch the whole show is amazing- it blows my mind."

Portions of the proceeds were donated to SF Women Against Rape.
