The Cesar Chavez Student Center has been undergoing renovations since the beginning of the summer, and construction has been a slow process. According to Assistant Director of Facilities and Maintenance John Doctor, the $1.5 million renovation will refurbish parts of the terrace level for future student use and waterproof the roof of the student center, which has been leaking. The project completion date has been pushed back from its original Sept. 9 date to mid-November to wait for new concrete seats that will replace the existing ones in the rooftop amphitheater. In addition, the student center is renovating the space on the terrace level to make room for a new computer lab and study area, according to Doctor. Astronomy Prof. Adrienne Cool conducts stargazing lectures from the top of Thornton Hall, but usually sends her students to the Cesar Chavez amphitheater to do research on their own. With the construction continuing into November, this has been impossible so far this semester. "I like to direct students there to do their homework when it involves looking at the night sky," Cool said. "Now I have to think harder about where to send them." Students were excited about the new computer lab, however, and expressed recent difficulties in finding available stations on campus to print or do research. "It's pretty packed in there," 19-year-old psychology major Keri-Ann Oddman said of the computers in Mary Park Hall. "Sometimes you just have to sit and wait. I think it would be really helpful, especially if you are in between classes and need to get something done quickly." Once the new seats arrive, construction will resume and should be completed before the Thanksgiving break.
