Cypress Hill member and producer DJ Muggs and mixtape award winner DJ Warrior are at it again with the second mixtape installment from Muggs’ Mash-Up Radio broadcast show. Coming only months after “Vol. 1,” “Mash-Up Radio Vol. 2” is a 16-track continuous mix of cut-and-paste rock-rap remixes from the broadcast show, which airs on four stations nationwide, and on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Shade 45. While “Vol. 1” was a perfect display of fusing two genres of music, “Vol. 2” is a result of bad experimentation and a loss of creativity.
“Vol. 1” paired popular rap singles with contemporary and classic rock riffs any listener would identify with, such as Outkast’s “Hey Ya” with Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” “Vol. 2,” on the other hand, combines not-so-popular raps with obscure rock instrumentals that the geekiest music aficionado’s ears would have trouble recognizing, like G-Unit with Citizen Cope.
While some of the mixes work, others fail as horribly as celebrity marriages. The Game can’t flow on a hip-hop beat, so who would expect him to keep up with Kasabian’s “Club Foot”? And have you ever wondered what 50 Cent sounds like over Rage Against the Machine, or Nas over Korn? It’s about as pleasing to the human ear as a rake scratching the concrete.
At the same time, there are those odd moments when the juxtaposed sounds of Biggie’s rhymes over Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, pt. 3” are mixed so well that it creates a fresh new experience from two classic songs. The same goes for D-12’s “Fight Music” mixed with the vocals and music of Tool and Common’s “The Corner” over Sublime’s “Doin’ Time.”
Experimenting is a good idea … when it’s two sorority sisters in a dorm room. With music, it’s trial and error, and most of this CD is full of errors.
