Hazy smoke and neon lights surround as the pulsating inter-galactic sounds of AIR beam out of the speakers. As if coming off a spaceship, one-by-one the AIR duo, JB Dunckel and Nicolas Godin, and their backup band take the small cramped stage dressed in pristine white outfits. The hypnotic beats rush into the audience’s veins making them to sway and step to where the music takes them.
The electronic sounds are broken up with perfectly timed whispered French nothings mixed with the English language spoken clear with French accents. The audience closes their eyes and are instantly swept off to a dreamland as if literally floating in air—a feeling you can’t help when listening to the appropriately named French electropop band.
AIR’s debut album “Moon Safari” hit the music scene in 1998. Three unpleasing albums followed in which the fans and band agreed was a mistake in sound, dubbing the sour albums "too experimental" for their following's taste. The band landed a gig composing the original score for Sofia Coppola’s 2000 indi-film “The Virgin Suicides.” The soft and dreamy songs complimented the film’s dark and melancholy premise. The soundtrack eased their fan's nerves in the sense that their sound was back in full swing, but still proved to not be enough for listeners—they wanted more.
The mood-enhancing duo followed up to their debut success with “Talkie Walkie” released in 2004. The classic cool and serene experimental sounds found in their “Moon Safari” album was what fans wanted to hear—“Talkie Walkie” did the trick.
The crowd attentively listened to each lyric, each push of the keys on the keyboard as they gazed onto the smoke covered stage, Songs like “Cherry Blossom Girl,” “Sexy Boy,” and “Redhead Girl” were some of the favorites played.
The newest album, “Pocket Symphony” was lightly touched upon at the show, allowing for fans of the original tunes and new material to be satisfied. Requests were shouted out by audience members but AIR only went with the songs they intended to play.
For some in the audience, it’s their first time seeing the duo. Whether you pop in one of their cds into your stereo at home or see them in person, the sound and feeling, fresh and crisp, are the same. Wherever you are, the AIR experience consumes you.
Whatever the Parisian duo comes out with, every song is like a breath of fresh AIR—something every fan of theirs cannot live without.
