Making and Breaking Love

San Francisco's best places for romance and heartbreak

It is that time of year in the city of San Francisco. The weather is beautiful, clothes become skimpier, and heads turn back and forth attempting to get a glimpse of the next hottie. This is the beginning of love or at least something like it.

Twin Peaks
If you are looking for a spot to swoon over a potential loved one, Twin Peaks is definitely the place to go. Located at the end of Market Street, this gorgeous summit overlooks the entire city where it can be viewed in all its glory. Though it is just as amazing during the day, night is when one can truly see the glimmer and glow of San Francisco. "I was with my date one day and I had no idea where he was taking me," says Randy Dudley. "When we arrived at the top and [I] was in awe. We just talked and watched the city. It was the best."

Vesuvio
North Beach is full of quirky cafes, dimly-lit restaurants and a never-ending hum of people roaming the streets. At night the neighborhood dazzles and is saturated with the intoxicating smell of delicious food. If you follow the twisted staircase to the second floor of Vesuvio, you will be greeted by the warm glow of streetlights filtering in through the windows. The second floor is the place to be. It offers a street side view of Columbus Street and the various people who pass by. The drinks are good and relatively cheap. Vesuvio is a perfect place for good conversation and a relaxing, yet vibrant environment.

Crissy Fields
On a sun-drenched day, residents of San Francisco are drawn to the open space of Crissy Field, and for good reason. Crissy Field may have once been a military airfield, but it has transformed over the years into the ideal place for couples to stroll on the beach and take in all that this historical location has to offer. If you are a sucker for awesome views of the bay, grab a blanket and snuggle up with your special person. On a clear day, lovers can picnic against the backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge and the small town of Sausalito. This is ideal for those who like to bask in the sun and enjoy being outside.

Japanese Tea Garden
There is no better time than the month of April to come out and enjoy the peaceful and tranquil environment of the Japanese Tea Garden. If your date is not into the bar scene, this is definitely a place worth checking out. Five dollars will grant you access to the world full of vibrant colors and winding paths that lead to the maze of cherry blossom trees and gardens. Some specific sights to see include the Drum Bridge and the view from the from the tea house. If you are in the mood for a little romance, cruise down under the Long Bridge and take in the beauty of the mellow pink wisteria.

Breakups are not easy. No one likes to tell the person they were once ridiculously infatuated with that the relationship is now a drag and that the sight of their face is unbearable. But hey, sometimes it has to be done.

Starbucks on West Portal
There's no better place to stage a breakup than a crowded coffee shop. Breakups are best done in public places, preferably with some type of beverage or food distraction. It would be wise to buy your soon-to-be ex one of those glorious caramel Frappuccinos and then lay it on them while they suck up billons of comforting calories. Hopefully this will prevent any psychotic outburst or embarrassing tears for the sake of all parties involved.

Muni Station
This may sound strange, but Muni stations are actually great places for breakups, but not so much if you're looking to dissolve a long-term, ultra committed connection. Those who need to put an end to something less serious, try this: right before you pay that $1.50, just tell your part-time lover that you won't be riding back with them. It's that simple. If you don't want to see this person for the rest of your life, no explanation is needed. Just turn away from the blank or shocked facial expression you will likely provoke, and hop on the train to your desired destination. Don't be afraid to glance over your shoulder to make sure they're not going to attack you. Thank goodness for Muni police.

The SF State Library Annex
If you are on campus, the walk to the Annex may be just what you need to get rid of clingy boy/girlfriend.This is especially for those of you who need someplace quiet, but still need the comfort of other people in the vicinity. Why not go to your local library? It is extremely helpful if you are the type of person who is not so good with words. How easy is it to scribble a barely legible sentence stating "It's over"? Easy enough.

Ocean Beach (in the parking lot)
So you have just had a pretty intense break-up session. There were some obscenities screamed and insults shouted, and now either the dumper or the dumpee is both physically and emotionally drained. Well, take off your shoes, walk across the million pebbles of sand, and debrief. Relax for a little bit. People make breaking up seem easy, but I wouldn't use a word that signifies simplicity for a more then complicated situation.
