Dear Readers,
As time goes on, the United States of America is becoming more diverse. While diversity often refers to the variety of ages, classes, races, religions, and more, it also embodies activities and evolving societal trends. The problem is, too often we follow the familiar, as opposed to exploring opportunities that present new experiences. For example, there are nearly two hundred countries in the world, yet most of us can barely name twenty. Dreaming of new journeys, let alone venturing outside of our comfort zones, is rare.
On the brighter side, when it comes to instilling a global mindset, San Francisco State University is ahead of the game. As one of the most diverse campuses in the world, we expose each other to new ways of thinking daily. For those interested in further developing their global understanding, SF State offers a multitude of majors, from international relations to women's studies. The new provost, Dr. Sue Rosser, has even made a commitment to promoting diversity one of her main goals.
At [X]Press, we aim to further your knowledge about diversity, which is why this issue is dedicated to cultures, subcultures, and underrepresented lifestyles in our city and beyond. From a how to on belly dancing to the reemergence of the accordion, our writers and photographers have examined the cutting edge. Amusement aside, in this issue we also bring you to the forefront of people seeking self-actualization. From an exposé about taking a gap year to a front row seat view of gender reassignment procedures, you are sure to feel both highs and lows. During your tour through our magazine, we hope you too will find enlightenment and personal growth. And if we made you want to uncover more people, places, and things along the way, then even better (check out page 5 for the city's finest events and pages 6 and 7 for trip tips).
It is unfortunate that some of us remain blind to parts of the world, but through exposure we bring ourselves closer together. Whether it comes in the form of friendship, a new journey, or something else, the way of exploring communities and practices are nearing us to the realization that we have more similarities than differences. So go ahead, get out of your zone, and then tell us about it. By opening your mind and sharing the beauty you have learned about unique ways and adventures of life, your story could be in this magazine. Together, we can reach our goal of awareness and mutual appreciation. With the doors unlocked, the possibilities for our world are endless.
Enjoy!
