The weekend started off right for the SF State women’s basketball team, as they ended a five-game losing streak, defeating the UC Davis Aggies, 74-53, Fri., Feb. 13 at home. Valentine’s Day, however, would leave them brokenhearted, losing to the Chico State Wildcats, 93-68.
An aggressive defense and improved shooting percentage helped SF State end a five game losing streak and beat the Aggies for the first time since the '84-'85 season. Cristal Fernandez sparked the Gators' offense and defense by scoring 19 points and getting into the Aggies’ passing lane as often as possible, recording six steals. Renee Jimenez also scored 19 for the Gators, coming off the bench and connected on five of her seven three point attempts.
“We executed our game plan,” coach Arden Kragalott said. “We hit our shots, it’s easier to win games when we hit our shots. We were more focused tonight.”
The Gators outplayed the Aggies from the first tip-off, never relinquishing the lead and forcing UC Davis to make mistakes. SF State forced 28 turnovers and held the Aggies to just 38 percent shooting in the game. Chrissy Ridenour contributed a double double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
But it was a different story Saturday night. The Gators' tank ran out of gas after dominating UC Davis. Chico State fell behind early in the game on Feb. 14, but the Gators couldn’t keep up when the Wildcats went on a 20-2 run halfway through the first half. Chico State held on to win, 93-68.
Jimenez and Bianca Rayford led the Gators with 15 points, while Fernandez added 12 points, five assists and five rebounds. It was not enough to hold off the Wildcats.
“Our intensity level and competitiveness are where they need to be,” said Kragalott. “We are fighting for a playoff spot.”
The Gators continue to fight for a playoff spot on Fri., Feb. 20, against Cal Poly Pomona and also on Sat., Feb. 21, against San Bernardino. Both games are away.
