The SF State men’s soccer team capped a successful road trip with a 0-0 draw against Chico State over the weekend and a 3-2 overtime victory versus Sonoma State this past Wednesday.

Against Chico State, who last season recorded 21 wins, the Gators dominated the play by out shooting the host Wildcats 19-7, but couldn’t find that elusive victory. However, against Sonoma State, the Gators got that victory.

“It went great, we haven’t taken it to them there in three years,” said Coach Joe Hunter, in referring to the Gators away victory at Sonoma State. It was a seesaw battle which saw both teams have a their share of the lead. Sonoma State netted the first goal as Brian Coyne setup by Tim Maycock for the goal. The Gators answered in the 14th minute as Ram Ananda scored.

After the half, the Gators took the lead in the 61st minute when Steven Reed scored to put the Gators up 2-1. Sonoma State had a chance to equalize as they were awarded a penalty kick. But Gator goalkeeper Gabe Hall came up big with the stop preserving the 2-1 lead.

However, five minutes from time, Sonoma State’s David Seidel scored to tie the game in the 85th minute which forced overtime.

In overtime, the Gator’s Tyler DeShazer put the ball in the back of the net in the 95th minute to secure the victory and a great start to the CCAA season. “The boys understand that by getting another victory we get the points,” said Coach Hunter.

With the victory over Sonoma State, the Gators are 3-5-1 overall. But more importantly they are 2-0-1 in the CCAA. The winner of their division automatically makes the playoffs.

On Friday, the Gators will play Cal State Monterey Bay. “Friday is going to be another tough one,” said Coach Hunter about the team’s upcoming match.
