On a gloomy day at Cox Stadium the fortunes of the SF State Men’s Soccer team reflected the weather as they got shutout by California State University at Bakersfield 3-0. Coming off a win against Cal State San Bernardino and a hard fought loss against #16 ranked University of California San Diego, the Gators lacked sharpness and focus against the Roadrunners (8-3-2).
The first goal for the Roadrunners came in the ninth minute when forward Jason Ashhurst’s shot hit the crossbar before going into the goal. Bakersfield came out after halftime and put the game away with goals from forwards Felipe Becerra and Jonas Nilsson.
The Gators and the Roadrunners had the same amount of shots on goal but the difference was that the Roadrunners capitalized on their chances and the Gators did not. The main reason for that was the excellent overall defense by the Roadrunners and four nice saves by vocal goalie Josh Wicks, who could be heard yelling commands at his teammates across Cox Stadium. What hurt the Gators were the 17 fouls that they committed, some of which led to Roadrunner goals.
“Bakersfield played a better game and it showed, our level of intensity was not what it should be," said head coach Joe Hunter. " We had several chances to score, plus we gave up some soft goals, when you do that it makes it hard to win. We can’t worry about where we are in the standings and if we are going to make the playoffs, we need to slow down and play our game.”
Goalkeeper Gabe Hall agreed with his coach and feels that the team needs to improve on the little technical things, like passing and touches. “We have all the skills to be good soccer players but we need to work better as a team so that we can use those skills for our benefit,” said Hall. “We need to step it up, which means that we can’t let the pressure of competition distract us from playing our best.”
As for the women's team their fortunes would be better as they took the field in the second game of an afternoon doubleheader against the Roadrunners of CSU Bakersfield (1-8-4). Coming off a weekend that saw them tie CSU San Bernardino in double overtime, then lose in double overtime to UC San Diego, the Gators played a tough physical game against the Roadrunners that ended up going into double overtime. When either team could score it was declared a (1-1) tie, their second tie in less than a week.
The game was tied at 0-0 in the 39th minute of the first half when Gator goalkeeper Erin Clark misjudged a shot from Roadrunner forward Taylar Sklar. Clark judged the ball to be heading to her left when the shot ended up going to her right. The Gators were finally able to score in the 69th minute when senior midfielder Marike Blazeski scored on a ball that first hit the crossbar before going into the goal. A two-on-one goal scored by sophomore midfielder Natalie Macias was taken away from the Gators when Macias was called for off sides.
“It was a good game, very competitive with both teams being aggressive and getting after the ball,” said head coach Jack Hyde. “We had enough chances to win but we couldn’t capitalize on our corner kicks and that hurt us.”
The Lady Gators had 10 corner kicks but were unable to take advantage of any.
The tie now improves the Lady Gators record to (2-8-2), (1-4) overall. Both Gator teams will play again on Sunday at Cox stadium against the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles.
