The 13th-ranked SF State Gators softball team spilt two doubleheaders this weekend while Gators coach Kristi Lansford recorded her 100th career victory in the process.

In the first series, played Friday against the 23rd ranked Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (9-5, 3-1 CCAA), the Gators (7-7, 2-2 CCAA) won game one 11-3 in six innings due to the eight-run rule.

In the bottom of the third inning, with the Roadrunners leading 3-0, second baseman Vanessa Rodrigue, third baseman Nicole Hartfield and shortstop Chrissy Hildebrandt started the comeback, opening the inning with three straight singles. Rodrigue scored the Gators’ first run on a ground out by Kristin Bartholamay. One out later, Jordanna Freemer hit an RBI single to score Hartfield, making it 3-2.

Just moments later, first baseman Nichole Ramirez hit a two-run double to right center to score Freemer and Hildebrandt, giving the Gators a 4-3 lead. Ramirez later scored in the inning on a wild pitch.

The Gators broke the game open in the sixth inning as they scored five runs on four hits. Fremmer followed her run-scoring hit in the third inning with a game-breaking three-run home run to left field. It was her first collegiate homerun.

Pitcher Sonja Garnett threw six solid innings, giving up five hits, three runs, one earned run and no walks while striking out four.

But in the second game, the Gators didn’t fair as well, losing 2-0. The Roadrunners' Christie Hill pitched a two-hit complete game while striking out four and walking one, improving to 6-1 on the year.

The Roadrunners scored in the fifth inning on a suicide squeeze and added an insurance run in the seventh inning to split the doubleheader.

The next day, the Gators continued their middling way, splitting two games with the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (6-2, 2-2 CCAA).

In the first game, with about 50 spectators in attendance, the Gators started promisingly as they took an early 2-0 lead on runs by Rodrigue and Hildebrandt in the bottom of the first inning.

However, the Toros tied the game at 2-2 in the second inning on a one-out, two-run double by Kelli Rodriguez.

The best chance for the Gators to bust the game wide open came in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hartfield struck out, stranding all runners. The Gators wouldn’t threaten the Toros again.

The Toros capitalized on their chances and added four runs in the fourth inning, three in the fifth and one more in the seventh in a 10-2 rout.

In the second game, the Gators sent staff ace Sonja Garnett in hopes of salvaging a spilt.

The Gators scored first in the bottom of the first inning and added two insurance runs in the fourth inning, as Garnett helped her own cause with a one-out, two-run single that scored Ramirez and catcher Mary Cunnie, opening up a 3-0 lead, a score that would stand.

Garnett, pitching just one day after the Roadrunners' game, pitched her seventh complete game of the season, a three-hit shutout, to preserve the 3-0 victory for the Gators. Garnett improved to 6-2 on the season.

The Gators spilt their fourth consecutive doubleheader and are looking for consistency down the stretch.

“We definitely need to get more consistent,” Lansford said. “We’d like to sweep them instead of splitting, but considering the schedule we’ve had, .500 right now is decent.”

With the victory against the Toros, Coach Kristi Lansford recorded her 100th career victory as coach at SF State. Lansford said that credit must be given to the players because they are the ones who win the game in the end.
