A little sprinting here, some school there, church service, and don’t forget the J-O-B -all in a day's work for Kavina “Princess” Hall.
The undeclared major, student athlete doesn’t even have hobbies, except everybody’s favorite “hanging out with friends.” Halls priorities are strictly intact and when its tracks season, you can be sure to see her on the field.
“It’s like I don’t do much anymore because it seems like I’m always occupied. I go to work, go to track practice, go to school and go to church,” expressed Hall.
Is she "two legit to quit" or what?
Her Royal Highness is only in her sophomore year at SF State and is still turning heads. Hall has come off a victory at the Johnny Mathis Track and Field Invitational in the 400-meter dash and also a second place finish in the 200-meter dash. Her performance at last week's Long Beach Invitational was exceptional. Hall placed fifth in the 400 and 200-meter dash. But she is not satisfied; Hall’s demeanor is strictly business.
“She (Kavina) is one of the best performers on the team, she accomplished a whole lot this year,” said freshman 400- meter sprinter, Mishla Holman.
The local track star was first introduced to track in high school. She chose SF State because she wanted her mom to continue to go to all of her track meets and admits she is a “daddy’s girl,” and since then she hasn’t looked back.
Well ... there was that embarrassing moment when Hall was attending El Cerrito High school and during a race, she glanced back to check out the competition and lost her focus.
“When I was a sophomore, I was fighting this girl for first place in a race and right before I got to the finish line I fell and she beat me,” said Hall. “Not only did I fall, but people were laughing and I lost because she ended up passing me.”
Nicknamed the “Princess” by coaches, for the sole reason that Hall has a tendency to whine about certain things, but ultimately the results are spectacular.
Head coach of women’s track and field, Terrence Burke expressed that the “princess” moniker is not a representative of who Kavina is and wants to be, especially on the track.
“Kavina has no 'diva' tendencies whatsoever, she doesn’t want any special treatment or recognition, she tries to be as unassuming as possible,” said Burke. “She listens very well and her questions are well considered. If anything I have to hold her back from wanting to work too hard.”
“I always end up doing it and put my all in to it, but I have to kind of whine about it before I do it,” said Hall.
To go along with here business attitude and her new Nia Long slash Halle Berry haircut, Hall always finds time to play around with teammates and crack some jokes.
“Practice can be boring and of course it’s hard, but I try to keep the team laughing and just make it fun. When you make it too serious, then you sike yourself out of it, but if you keep it fun you really don’t focus on how hard the workout is, you just do it,” said Hall.
Teammates and coaches agree that Hall’s personality and character make her a genuine and fun person to be around.
“You need someone like her because we all know practice can be boring and hard, but when you work with someone who is fun it makes time go by faster,” said senior 100-meter hurdler Najma Nuriddin. “She is good friend of mine off and on the track field.”
“She’s the type of person who makes coaching rewarding and most days she even makes me smile,” said Burke.
Her goals for the remainder of the season are to get better and defend her conference title in the 400-meter and grab the 200-meter title on the way.
“Being that its only three weeks before conference, I just want to be consistent with practice and just give it my all, and really focus myself on track,” said Hall. “I really want to do well at conference and defend my 400 meter title. Whatever my coach says it takes then I’m more than willing to do so.”
