The SF State’s men’s soccer team suffered a tough 1-2 loss to Sonoma State in the second overtime at Friday afternoon’s home game.
The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) duel took a fast and exciting pace at SF State’s Cox Stadium, where the previously 3-0 (CCAA) Sonoma State Seawolves visited the 1-2 (CCAA) Gators.
The teams scored within a minute of each other in the first half, starting with Andrew Bailey’s goal with an assist from Brett Cook for the Seawolves, 9:06, nine minutes and six seconds into the game.
“It set on fire early,” said Gators’ Casey Poston. “We knew we were in a game. After that it was a battle.”
Forward Wesley Whitt of SF State immediately answered back with a goal at 9:48. Dylan Glass had the assist.
“Dylan broke away downside. I crossed in, took my time and volleyed into the corner,” Whitt said.
After Whitt’s goal, there was no score until late into a sudden death second overtime, when Sonoma State midfielder Nathan Medina scored off a pass from Bailey.
The Gators expressed their frustrations after the tough loss.
“It seems like we’re big rivals,” said forward Dylan Glass. “It was intense. We dominated the second half, shut down their two stars. We’re just not finishing well. We didn’t finish.”
“We gave up an early goal, held our heads up and got right back in it,” said goalkeeper Ezra Mendoza. “I felt we controlled the game.”
The Gators’ next home game is against Humboldt State on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 12:30 p.m.
