The SF State men’s basketball team lost their cool and the game against the CSU Dominguez Hills’ Toros on Saturday night with an ending score of 79-51.
Five players were ejected from the game because of a dispute between SF State’s Ian Johnson and a player from the visiting team. No punches were exchanged, only words.
One of the players from the Toros grabbed Johnson’s leg and he was trying to kick himself free, Head Coach Bill Treseler said.
“We were frustrated,” said Treseler. “We don’t condone fighting ever.”
The four other players who were ejected from the game were from CSU Dominguez Hills. Trevon Bryant, Carlos Rivers, Demetrius Love and Shamont Brown were given technical fouls and ejected from the game after they left their seats and ran onto the court to participate in the fight between Johnson and their teammate.
Most of the game was very physical which helped to frustrate SF State’s team even more. By the end of the first half, 10 personal fouls and three technical fouls had been called on the Gators. A total of 49 fouls were called on both teams.
“It was a physical game,” said Treseler. “We kind of like it when there are a minimum of fouls called.”
The Toros jumped to an early lead, and in the first 10 minutes had a 23-11 lead over the Gators. Twice during in the first half the Gators were able to reduce the Toros to a single-digit lead, but in the last five minutes of the first half, the Toros had a 24-4 run, which brought the deficit to 16 points.
During the second half, CSU Dominguez Hills increased their lead to 25 and from that point on, the Gators were never able to catch up. Gabe Bernard put up 21 of the 79 points scored for CSU Dominguez Hills. He was 6-9 from the field and 4-6 from outside the three-point line.
The Toros also had 16 steals and forced the Gators to have 29 turnovers.
SF State’s Arcenio Ramirez put up 11 points and helped to keep the Toros on their toes with his speed.
With this loss and Friday night’s loss against UC San Diego, the Gators are now 5-11 overall and 1-10 in their league.
“They’re disappointed, they put a lot into this,” said Treseler. “We are all disappointed, but we’re not discouraged.”
