The ball rocketed from her foot, fluttered the net and came to a rest at the back of the goal. In overtime, Gator forward Shanna Vachal scored her second goal of the season and the winning goal for the women’s soccer team, a 4-3 finish over Humboldt State on Sunday.
Vachal’s goal came after a battle-filled second half where three goals were scored late in the match and within two minutes of each other sending the game into overtime. Eighty-two minutes in Lumberjack Erin Ashdown scored on a pass from Kelsey Gomula evening the match at 2-2. A minute later, SF State and Humboldt scored within 14 seconds of each other, first with another goal from Vachal followed by a score from Lumberjack Kim Carroll to level the score at 3-3.
The victory broke the Gators’ three-game losing streak a snapped a scoring drought where the team was outscored 8-0.
“It’s a good game to win in overtime,” Gator coach Jack Hyde said. “After being ahead and being tied up, that combination might knock the spirit out of them.”
Humboldt took control of the game in the 9th minute with Ashdown’s first goal of the game. The Gators tied the match when Jane Campbell put the scoreless team on the board with 15 seconds left on the clock in the first half.
“We changed the dynamic on the field,” Campbell said. “We used different combinations within our team to mix it up, but we need to tighten our marks on the field.”
About half way through the second period SF State grasped the lead with an assisted shot by midfielder Whitney Downes. Only a few, scant minutes later their lead was cut short and eliminated, bringing the game to another tie on the second goal from Ashdown.
“We had trouble putting balls in the net,” forward Vachal said. “But we won more 50/50 balls and challenged more.”
Vachal’s two goals were her first of the year and the team’s 10th.
“Everybody played like they wanted it,” Vachal said. “We’re all tired and worked hard in the pre-season.”
The women’s soccer team now has BYU- Hawaii and Cal State Monterey Bay locked in their sights beginning on Wednesday at Cox Stadium.
“Monterey has gotten better,” Hyde said. “They have a team to be reckoned with.”
