Halfway through the season, the Gators find themselves in fourth place and struggling to score goals.
“We just need to keep scoring,” said coach Jack Hyde. “We need to score to win.”
The Gators did just that Tuesday when the team outlasted visiting Mesa State 1-0.
Robin Bowman scored the lone goal 34 minutes in on a pass from Rachel Brusnahan.
SF State (5-6-1, 3-3-1 CCAA) has three players who have scored two goals this season in Robin Bowman, Shanna Vachal and Whitney Downes, but have been shut out in six matches. The team has been outscored 21-13 this season.
“We need to be more creative and create our own opportunities,” Hyde said. “Most importantly, we need to finish those chances and score goals.”
Their defense has also been a key factor in wins. So far, Sarah Baldares and Emily Hart have shared time protecting the goal. They have a total of 43 saves and three clean sheets.
Hyde says his team will be concentrating more on conference games, like when the Chico State Wildcats visit Cox Stadium on Sunday at 3 p.m..
“We will not get worse,” Hyde said. “We will get better.”
