Visiting Chico State shuts down Gators

It was a story of two halves, as coach Jack Hyde put it.

The Gators were tough defensively and offensively in the first half of the Sunday match up at Cox Stadium against Chico State, but the second half was a completely different story.

“We didn’t put it away in the first half,” Hyde said. “And then we lost our composure in the second half.”

The Gators, who fell 1-0 to Chico, were unable to score on three opportunities, one of which a corner kick, in the first half. Alex Emanuel had two opportunities at goal.

In the second half, the Gators looked like a different team. They only had one shot attempt, which gave them a total of four in the game. The Wildcats, on the other hand, had 11 opportunities and capitalized on one of them.

A little under the 30 minute mark in the second half, Chico’s Katherine Bagwell assisted Anjie Goulding in the game’s only goal. SF State were unable to regroup after that.

“We knew coming into today that this would be a one-goal game,” Hyde said. “Last time we got the one goal, and this time they got it.”

Despite giving up the game-winning goal, Emily Hart had five saves, one of which included a spectacular dive to snatch a ball that was heading into the goal.

The Gators are looking at Sunday’s game, along with their next two home games against Cal Poly Ponoma and Cal State Bernardino as a three-game set. They hope to get the best of this series and end their home stand on a good note before they hit the road again.
