SF State men’s basketball team won by the largest margin in coach Bill Treseler’s three year career, easily handling the visiting Golden State Baptist College Bears 86-43 on Tuesday at The Swamp. The win was the Gators’ second consecutive home victory (5-3, 1-1).

“The guys executed it pretty well,” Treseler said. “It’s easy to get sloppy in a game like this.”

All but one Gator scored in the game, and SF State easily controlled the pace against the much smaller Bears.

“We didn’t play at their level,” junior forward Ryan Wessels said. “We played our game.”

The Gators went on a tear five minutes in, going on a 41-10 run to end the half. During the run, the Gators had eight of their 15 steals, and worked the ball around the perimeter, creating open shots. The team was 18-for-37 from the field and 5-for-11 beyond the arc.

Utilizing their size advantage–-Jake Pignanello, the tallest player for GSBC at 6 feet 5 inches tall, had just five rebounds–-the Gators out rebounded the Bears 48-23. Gators Ryan Wessels, David Van Someren and Will Logan had seven rebounds apiece. SF State only allowed its opponent to grab six offensive rebounds to its 22.

However, the Gators gave the ball away 22 times, a statistic Wessels said he hopes the team can cure itself of before they enter the heart of conference play after the winter recess.

“We turned the ball over more than we should have,” Wessels said, “We’ll clean it up over our holiday break.”

Treseler acknowledged the team’s defensive play, and said the Gators “played really hard on defense” forcing the Bears to only convert 15 of 45 attempts from the field.

Van Someren, who added 11 points in his 17 minutes of play, was 4-for-5 from the field and sunk three from behind the arc.

“It was nice to get out there,” Van Someren said. “Every game we focus on getting better so we had to run our game.”

Darryl Robinson scored 10 points off the bench and Wessels added 10 as well. Freshman guard Robert Hayes, who was limited to 18 minutes, scored eight points and had four assists to go along with his three steals.

“I definitely think we’re starting to get a sense of where another player’s going to be,” Treseler said, referring to the chemistry and teamwork the Gators are starting to show.

The returning players have a sense of where their teammates will be on the court, Van Someren said, and the team’s cooperative play was shown in its 30 assists. “We’re trying to perfect our offense. We’re working so in league everything’s crisp.”

The 31-point halftime lead allowed for more of SF State’s backup players to share minutes on the court as every player on the bench saw time against the Bears.

The Gators will host Pacific Union University at 7 p.m. on Saturday before they return in January to continue conference play. SF State split its first two California Collegiate Athletic Association games last weekend, edging Cal Poly Pomona 60-59 before falling to Cal State San Bernardino 69-54.
