The SF State baseball team, looking to avoid a sweep by Cal State Stanislaus, came in swinging the bats in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday only to see Stanislaus steal the win away after scoring six runs in the top of the seventh in a heartbreaker.
In the first game, the Gators took the first lead of the game, 1-0, after an opposite field home run by catcher Matt Memeo in the bottom of the third.
Though, the lead wouldn’t last long as the Warriors (9-3) came back to score two runs in both the fourth and the fifth inning to take the lead for good.
The Gators (3-9) were able to stay close with a solid pitching performance by Spencer Kreisberg, giving up only four earned runs over seven innings with seven strikeouts. In the fifth after striking out the first two batters, Kreisberg allowed three straight hits, the worst being the last—a 2-run double to left centerfield.
“I just lost focus during those two innings. Overall I had a pretty good performance,” said Kreisberg.
He settled down after that, shutting down the Warriors' offense and leaving the game at the end of the seventh with only a two run deficit, 4-2. Danny Graybill came in relief for Kreisberg in the eighth inning giving up two runs to the three batters he faced.
Stanislaus used six different pitchers to hold the Gators to only three runs on eight hits with Jeff Harter getting the win after pitching two innings of scoreless relief.
The Gators had a couple chances, but weren’t able to get the timely hits they needed and fell to the Warriors 6-3, despite the same number of hits as their opponent.
“We were getting good swings on the ball, but that’s baseball; you can do everything right and still hit it right at them,” said coach Tony Dress.
In the second game of the doubleheader, both teams came out hot. Stanislaus, capitalizing on two early Gator errors, scored three runs in both the first and second inning of the game.
“You can’t defend walks and you can’t defend errors,” said Coach Dress.
The Gators would respond both times. A clutch two-run double by Conor Buestad followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by Ernie Munoz tied it in the bottom of the first.
In the second inning the Gators would score two more times, first on an RBI double by Bobby Carini then an RBI single by Matt Kavanaugh to bring the Gators closer, 6-5.
“We showed a lot of character; we never gave up, said Dress.
In the sixth inning, after allowing two straight walks by Warrior pitchers, Nick Nyman hit a fly ball straight to right fielder Kyle Loretelli with two outs, which normally would have ended the inning. Loretelli dropped the ball and two runs would come around to score to give the Gators an 8-7 lead, despite no hits in the inning.
The final inning, after two RBI hits to give Stanislaus the lead 9-8, designated hitter Dante Palacios broke the game open with a 3-run home run to deep right field. The dejected Gators went three and out in the bottom of the inning to end the game, 13-8.
“That’s a heartbreaker. We had a chance to win the game, being up by one with an inning to go. It’s just disappointing,” said Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh would finish the game 3-3 with two RBI’s while Beustad went 1-3 with an RBI double.
Despite the loss the Gators feel they got their bats going enough to give them confidence headed into the series with Chico State beginning this Friday.
