The SF State softball team stays perfect at home with an 8-0 record after a sweep in Friday’s doubleheader against conference opponent CSU San Bernardino, 1-0 and 4-2.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Gators (15-12, 5-8 CCAA) took the lead on an RBI-single by Jordanna Freemer that scored Karolyn Gubbine in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0.

The slim lead would prove to be enough as freshman pitcher Ashley Jackson threw a complete game shutout allowing seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in the victory.

“She had (the opponents) off balance all game,” coach Cristina Byrne said. “She threw a lot of stuff off-speed, a lot of movement. She was pretty deceptive and that worked to her advantage.”

The Coyotes (19-16-1, 10-7 CCAA) loaded the bases with only one out in the second inning, but Jackson (7-4) forced two ground outs to get out of the inning.

Again, in the fifth with the bases loaded, Jackson was able to end the threat by getting the Coyotes to line out into a double play.

In the second game of the doubleheader the Gators took the early lead 1-0 once again on an RBI single by Freemer, this time in the bottom of the first inning.

The Coyotes would come back to tie the game at 1-1 on an unearned run after an error on a double steal attempt by in the third.

Freemer answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run over the centerfield fence to give SF State a 2-1 advantage. It was her fourth home run of the season.

The Gators would add on to their lead with a two-run double by Alyssa Esquibel in the bottom of the sixth, making it 4-1.

In the seventh, the Coyotes tried to make a comeback after an RBI double cut the lead to 4-2, but pitcher Kendra Wood got the final batter to fly out to left field to secure the win.

Wood (5-1) pitched seven innings allowing only four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in the win.

“They hadn’t seen me before, so I thought it was to my advantage. Overall I am happy with the team win,” said Wood.
