Seven Gators names to SF State athletic Hall of Fame
Seven Gators will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a 5 p.m. ceremony Saturday April 5. For tickets contact the SF State Department of Athletics at 415-338-2218.
Frank Verducci, 1954: Verducci was a three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, and track. He earned Second Team All-American honors and First Team All-Northern California Intercollegiate Soccer Conference Team in 1953. He has been teaching at SF State since 1963 and had also coached soccer and basketball teams for the Gators.
Art Chavez, 1970: Chavez was the 125-pound Far Western Conference Champion in 1968. He placed fifth in the 1969 NCAA College Division Championships and also held titles in freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling for the National AAU.
Phil Kernan, 1995: In 1995 the four-year starter earned North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year, All-American, and First Team All-Region honors. Kernan finished in the all time top ten for SF State in home runs, hits, doubles, triples, games played, runs scored, at bats, walks and put outs.
Harry Marra: Marra received Coach of the Year honors in the North Coast Athletic Conference twice during his time as track and field and cross country coach from 1981 to 1993. He coached 28 All-Americans, a National Champion and a NCAA record holder. The coach has been involved in multiple U.S. track and field teams.
Lee Lofton, 1998: The four-year wrestler was a National Champion in 1997 and helped the Gators to SF State’s first ever team National Championship. In 1993 he was North Coast Athletic Conference champion and in 1996 he was an NCAA All-American and Western Regional Champion. He was tight end for the Gator football team from 1992 to 1994.
Terry Tuzzolino, 2000: In 2000 Tuzzolino was Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and National Champion in wrestling. The two-time team captain holds a seat in the top ten for career pins at SF State with 20.
Roberta Morrow, 2003: The 2002 Californian College Athletic Association women’s soccer Player of the Year was a part of the 2002 soccer team that went to the NCAA Division II National Women’s Soccer Championships. Morrow earned All-Region Team and All-CCAA Team honors twice.
Treseler selected to coach D-II West All-Star squad
Head men’s basketball coach Bill Treseler coached the West All Star Team for the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star Game for Division II. The West loss 103-97 in the March 28 game at the Naismith Memorial Hall in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
The California College Athletic Association sent two player representatives, Cal State San Bernardino’s Marlon Pierce and Humboldt State’s Devin Peal. Pierce finished with four points, six assists and four steals, and Peal scored 12 points.
In Treseler’s third season the Gators finished third in the CCAA (the best finish in the CCAA since joining in 1998-1999) with a 17-12 record (the most wins since 1993-1994). Treseler earned Coach of the Year for the CCAA.
