SF State softball team split the doubleheader against conference opponent Sonoma State at home on April 4.
The Gators took the first game of the series 5-2, but couldn’t get the bats going in the second game and fell to the Seawolves 4-0.
“We just didn’t have it in the second game. We didn’t make the adjustments and it was not good softball on our part. Just one of those games, but tomorrow's a new day,” said senior Jordanna Freemer.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Seawolves took the first lead of the game, 1-0, on an RBI double from pitcher Simone Brandalise.
The Gators struck back in the bottom of the inning after Freemer took the first pitch she saw, a hanging change-up, deep over the centerfield fence for a solo home run to tie the score at 1-1.
The home run, her seventh of the season, easily cleared the second fence 30 feet past the first fence.
“I was lucky enough to see it out of her hand…She served it up for me and I was able to capitalize,” said Freemer.
Sonoma State scored on an RBI groundout in the next half inning to take the lead back 2-1.
SF State responded in the fourth with two runs on an RBI double by pinch hitter McKenna Coelho and an RBI single by Freemer to take the lead 3-2.
The Gators added to their lead in the fifth inning on an RBI double by right fielder Alyssa Esquibel, scoring Kelsey Wood from second, and a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Kelly McDonald.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Jackson (11-6) started off a little shaky in the first and second inning, but settled down and found the strike zone, shutting down the Sonoma State offense the rest of the way.
Jackson pitched seven innings allowing only two earned runs while striking out six and walking four in the win.
The second game proved to be more frustrating for the Gators as they had trouble adjusting to a larger strike zone by new home plate umpire David Clark and to Seawolves pitcher Brittany Williams.
“The umpire had a wider [strike] zone and [Sonoma State] made the adjustments. Offensively we just didn’t make the adjustments and in two innings they scored all the runs they would need,” said Byrne.
Williams shut down the Gators allowing only four hits through seven innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Sonoma State did most of the damage in the third scoring three runs on four hits led by second baseman Kayla Ledford’s 2-run single with two outs.
Kendra Wood (8-3) took the loss, allowing four earned runs in five innings while striking out seven and walking two.
SF State softball team returns to the diamond tomorrow for a doubleheader in the series finale against Sonoma State.
The first pitch will begin at 1 p.m. at the SF State Softball Field.
