Nyman to coach in Germany

The SF State baseball team’s season may be over, but that doesn’t mean the Gators’ hitting and outfield coach Gerard Nyman gets to rest. For the next two months, Nyman will be in Germany working for Major League Baseball International.

“I’ll be teaching not just the athletes but the other coaches as well,” said Nyman, who left for Germany on Wednesday.

Nyman said this opportunity came about with the help of SF State head coach Tony Dress, who worked for MBLI from 1992 to 1995.

“He put me in contact with the powers that be and the rest is history,” Nyman said.

Although Nyman said he looks forward to his two-month stint on the other side of the globe, he added that he would have liked to have had a chance to let the Gators’ season sink in the help with recruiting for next year.

“But I couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” Nyman said.

Bretan qualifies for nationals

Anna Bretan qualified for nationals in three events after earning All-CCAA honors in two events.
Bretan qualified for the 1,500 meter, the 3,000 meter, and the 5,000 meter at the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. She will only compete in the 5,000 meter, where she is ranked 15th with a time of 17:18.06 minutes.

At the California Collegiate Athletic Association championships Bretan took first in the 5,000 meter (17:40.87) and second in the 3,000 meter (10:02.60).

Bretan will run the preliminaries in the 5,000 meter in Walnut, Calif. on May 23, and if she advances, she will run in the finals on May 24. The top eight finishers will be All-Americans.

Volleyball adds four recruits

Gator volleyball coach Michelle Patton has begun building her team for the fall 2008 season, and last week added four recruits to the squad.

Middle hitter Sloane Williams and outside hitters Kelly Burke, Lisa Morgan and Beth Perkins joined outside hitter Kyle Lamet and setter Kristin Kenney on the growing roster.

“I can’t speak enough about the four young ladies that we have signed,” Patton said. “Each of them are outstanding individuals and are collectively up for the challenge of competing in a great volleyball conference.”

Burke, a 5-foot-10-inch transfer from Cañada College, and Perkins, a 5-foot-9-inch transfer from Mt. Hood Community College, were both two-time junior college All-Conference selections. Morgan, 5-foot-10-inch, was a league MVP and four-year starter at La Quinta High School in Indian Wells, Calif. Williams, a 6-foot-4-inch transfer from Lake Land community college, was a junior college All-Conference selection and holds the school record for kills (31) at Coronado High School, Calif.

Gator volleyball restarts this fall after a four-year hiatus, having finished the 2003 season with a 4-26 record. It will compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA Division II).

This summer, first-year head coach Patton will be hosting a series of camps for players of all ages. For more information go to www.statevolleyballcamps.com.
