Not even a goal in the final two minutes, sending the game into overtime, could atone for a costly mistake by the SF State men’s soccer team in the home opener.
The Gators finished in a disappointing 1-1 tie after overtime against Seattle Pacific University despite being in control for much of the game.
Fresh off their cross-country road trip to Connecticut on Sunday the Gators came out a little flat to start the game with the Falcons controlling play early.
SF State made one big mistake when the defense failed to clear a ball in the box and Falcons player Andy Wolverton was able to control the ball sneaking it right by keeper Israel Cisneros for Seattle Pacific’s only goal of the game.
“We just can’t give away silly goals. That’s been our blemish right now. Once we get that under control I think we’re going to better,” said head coach Joe Hunter. “In soccer you got to learn the hard way.”
After that miscue it seemed to light a fire under Gators players as they stayed aggressive keeping the ball on the Falcons end for much of the second half and overtime.
As the pressure mounted SF State was able to break through in the final two minutes of the game getting a goal from freshman Antonio Ugarte. It was his second goal of the season.
After playing a ball wide Wes Whitt sent a cross to the back post connecting with Dylan Glass who hit it off the pole, but Antonio Ugarte came in to finish it off tying the score at 1-1.
“I wanted to keep my distance, but once the ball hit off the post I thought it was a little high for me to trap so I jumped hoping that I could just make contact on it,” said Ugarte.
A little more than a minute later Sergio Villalva was ejected with a red card on a questionable call, but the Gators didn’t skip a beat in the overtime period.
SF State outshot the Falcons three to one in the overtime despite being a man down.
Both coach Hunter and assistant coach Kelly Coffey agreed the team “showed their grit” by coming through with a goal in the final minutes of the game even after their long trip on Sunday.
“I think we showed good resilience. We kept battling and battling until we got that goal at the end," said Coffey. “Even with ten guys it says something about our guys.”
The Gators will be back on the pitch this Friday for their conference opener against the 3-0 UC San Diego at Cox Stadium at 1:30 pm.
