Leading scorer Antonio Ugarte was down with an injury, but that didn’t stop midfielder Mario Hernandez from getting his.
With Ugarte hurt at midfield Hernandez, despite pleas from his team to kick it out of bounds, turned around and launched a perfect ball three yards from midfield that sailed just over the keeper’s fingertips into the top left corner of the net.
Hernandez just stood there dusting his shoulder off towards the ecstatic crowd as teammates grabbed him and celebrated at midfield after he connected on an improbable game-winning goal in overtime.
“They were telling me to kick it out. I saw the goalie off the line so I was like ‘just take it. Its overtime what do I have to lose’,” said Hernandez. “It felt perfect (coming off my foot); I put it right where I wanted it”
The SF State (3-5-1, 1-4 CCAA) men’s soccer team came out with something to prove, after a six-game winless streak, finishing off a wild comeback against undefeated No. 17 Chico State (7-1, 3-1 CCAA) 2-1 at Cox Stadium.
The win gives the Gators their first victory against the Wildcats since 2004 and snaps Chico’s win streak at seven.
With a couple lineup adjustments head coach Joe Hunter felt his team finally played the full 90 minutes and were able to keep Chico State in check, only allowing one soft goal.
“We threw (Charles) Conway up front for some size and we moved Wes (Whitt) to the back to give us some athleticism. And that worked out today,” said Hunter.
Chico State took the first lead after a hand ball was called just outside of the penalty box and Chico player Kyle Crain took the free kick connecting for the 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.
In the 77th minute after Hernandez earned a penalty kick team captain Dylan Glass elected the freshman Ugarte to take the penalty kick much to his astonishment.
With his coach unable to watch because of the tension Ugarte stepped up like a veteran and beat the keeper to tie the game at 1-1 for his fourth goal of the season.
“I was like ‘go ahead you can take it, you can make it’. He’s been on fire; (he) leads the team in goals, why not. He’s young, pretty confident and I knew he would score,” said Glass.
That sent the game into overtime when Hernandez connected on an unbelievable shot near midfield for the game winner five minutes into the extra session. It was his first goal of the season.
Though, Hunter still warned his team about a letdown for Sunday’s game.
“I told them ‘this game was great but put it behind you because it means nothing if we come out on Sunday and lay an egg. You got to put your money where your mouth is and play’, said Hunter. “That’s going to be the test, if we can put two together that will be good.”
SF State returns to the pitch this Sunday to host Cal State Stanislaus at Cox Stadium at 3 p.m.
